Licence obligations
To practice in Queensland all registrants must be a qualified
registered nurse, enrolled nurse or midwife and hold a current
licence with Council.
The annual licence certificate is an important document.
It recognises the holder’s status as a professional nurse or
midwife. A licence provides evidence to employers and members
of the public that the holder has been appropriately educated and
is considered fit and competent to practise.
Employers also have the ability to confirm the licence status of a
nurse or midwife through QNC’s online register service.
How do I apply for a licence?
As a new graduate, you can apply for your licence by post or in
person. To register or enrol you need to read the Queensland Graduate checklist, complete and sign a QNC
application form and provide some specific information (see below).
What do I need to provide?
To become a licenced nurse or midwife in Queensland you will
need to provide the following:
- A completed application form.
- A certified copy of evidence of identification. This must be
a passport, a birth certificate, a deed poll or a certificate of
citizenship. Please note we do not accept driver’s licences
or student cards.
- A certified copy is a photocopy that has
been certified by a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for
Declarations, Solicitor or Notary Public to be a true and correct
copy of the original document. The certification must appear on
the front of each page of the document.
- If applicable, a certified copy of evidence of change of name
such as a marriage certificate or deed poll.
- Payment of AU$143.00 (application fee of $49.00 and licence
fee of $94.00). Payment must be in Australian dollars and may
be by cheque, money order, credit card (for mail applications)
or EFTPOS and cash at our office. Please do not send cash
through the post.
When can I apply for a licence?
As a new graduate, you are encouraged to submit your application
prior to completion of your course.
Your application will be partially processed and stored until we
receive the list of successful graduands from your course provider.
Registration or enrolment is granted on the basis of this list.
We are unable to advise if your name appears on the list of
graduands supplied by the university or Vocational Education
Training (VET) sector. To seek confirmation if your name appears
on the list, contact your university or VET-sector institute.
Alternatively you can provide QNC with a certified copy of your
academic record upon completion of the course.
How will I know when I am licensed?
Whether you lodge your application in person or via post,
upon successful registration or enrolment you will be issued
with a licence certificate. This generally takes 15 to 20 working
days—then you are eligible to work in any public or private facility
in Queensland.
Regardless of when your licence is first issued, it is only valid until
30 June. To continue practising after this date, you must apply to
renew your licence during the annual licence renewal period.
Annual licence renewal
Licence renewal takes place each year between 1 April and 30
June. During this three month period, all nurses and midwives
in Queensland must apply to QNC to renew their licence if they
intend to practise for another year (from 1 July).
It is your responsibility to ensure your licence is renewed during
this time, whether or not a licence renewal notice is received.
After initial registration a quick and efficient alternative to renew
your licence is via the online register service. You are encouraged to
try this simple, accurate and prompt process to renew your licence
during the renewal period. However, this service is not available for
new graduates applying for their licence for the first time.
